Exploring the Possibilities

What’s the Deal with Dating

Whether you’re an adult or a teen, always been single or single-again, you may have an interest in dating, or maybe you feel pressured to date. Your ambitions could be to find someone to marry eventually, or perhaps you’re just looking for a companion of sorts. The courtship rituals of human beings have changed immensely over the centuries, and of course, vary within different cultures. There was a time when “dating”, as we know it, didn’t exist, but parents arranged marriages for their children. These days, people seem to rely more and more on dating websites and computer algorithms to help them find a compatible partner. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. However, people who are dating seem more and more interested in finding an authentic connection with someone special.

Look at the Heart

What the Bible Says About Dating

Whatever your life circumstances or your intentions, the best outcome is likely to depend on your perspective and objectives for dating. It would be best to have some guidelines and boundaries going into any dating relationship to ensure you have the best chance of success. As you enter any dating relationship, the first step should always be to evaluate your intentions and ensure that your dating goals align within the relationship. The Bible doesn’t specifically give us guidelines about dating, but one of the closest things you might find to it is a verse found in the Book of Proverbs 31:30. It says, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.” This is obviously speaking about a woman who has understood the importance of having a relationship with God. But it could just as easily be describing a man. The writer, in essence, is saying that the outward things that tend to attract us to one another aren’t necessarily the most important thing. A person whose heart is attuned to God is on the right track, and that’s worth making a note of.
